Filipina Stamenkova

Filipina Stamenkova (born 1990) graduated in Textiles from the National Academy of Arts in 2013, before redirecting her academic interests to the history and theory of art, with a focus on contemporary art. Her creative ways led her to co-found Sofia‘s independent city branding project #soSofia in 2015. Delivering a contemporary view on Bulgaria‘s capital in form of souvenirs, interactive stories and social happenings.

Along with her partner, in 2015, she founded 2MBD — a multidisciplinary studio involved in high-end creative direction. Studios clients include Yalta Club, Solar Festivals, Sofia Live Club, Horizon Festival, Boyscout Magazine, Lidl, Telenor Bulgaria to name a few.

In 2016, again along her partner, she started the AБVA Foundation — a physical and digital archive that searches, documents, studies, preserves and promotes remarkable examples of the visual art from the Kingdom of Bulgaria and the People‘s Republic of Bulgaria. Up to now apart from it‘s growing online/offline collection, the archive has released a book called „Думи“ (Words) and a memory game with images from the archive.

In the 2020s she came back to art in its purest form. Her interdisciplinary approach led her to experiment with a variety of media. Some of her signature works are objects representing ordinary, scaled-down household items made of mirror. In her painting, as well as her easel sculpture, the artist is interested in the dialogue she herself conducts with reality — a reality that one can accept and sustain only with a subtle sense of humour and a naïve childlike view of the world and its eternal, insuperable dramas. It is also a kind of game: a play of lights and shadows dancing between them, of rhythmically flashing rays of light; a play of reflections, when the creator is, now, in the role of the reflected and, at another time, in that of the reflecting.
